"(Sake is) really called nihonishu or seishu -- this is the proper term for Japanese rice wine. It really shouldn’t be called sake because 'sake' is the generic Japanese term for alcohol,” lectures Chua from behind his darkened classroom/bar inside Yoi.

The space reflects the double meaning of Yoi. In Japanese, "yoi" can mean pleasant, or it can mean drunk. On one side is the darkened bar only moodily illuminated by string lights. Walk through a doorway, and you find a vibrant industrial space with bare concrete walls sprayed with graffiti with an open kitchen buzzing with activity.
