This is what really happened in Super Mario Bros 2. Mario 2 is arguably the WEIRDEST mario game (made by Nintendo, anyway), so it's only fair that I make fun of it a little bit.

Have you ever been playing Mario Bros 2 and thought to yourself - gosh, that's a long way to fall right away in the beginning? That's what I was thinking, so I made this. Hope you enjoy watching Luigi's Accident.

This is The Basement's first attempt at creating an animation. It's a comedy short - a retro revue if you will. It's a small experiment, to be honest, on how well a funny Nintendo cartoon will do. I know there are a bunch of similar type videos out there, but none that I can find that have been made by smaller channels. I've been toying with the idea of doing more of these, and I'm waiting to see if this is well received by the Youtube community. If it is, I might make more Mario cartoons. If not, well hey, it was a fun experience. Making cartoons is hard work, and takes FOREVER. I'm definitely going to make more like this since it's a faster process to play the animation in through screen capture.

I figured it'd be funny to have Mario slam the door on his poor, broken-legged brother, because of the supposed sibling rivalry.

Ultimately, I think a lot of this is conjecture. Nintendo is obviously trying to reinforce the idea regularly that Mario and Luigi get along. Even if Luigi is a clutz and a bit of an oaf. While Nintendo has been aiming to make Luigi the funny, plucky comic relief, I really ultimately hold that they get along well. I mean, look at Mario and Luigi super star saga.

Well, Luigi is known for his comedic relief, so I figured - hey! Let's break his leg. That'd be funny. There is no doubt that part of my inspiration came from the Family Guy episode where Peter falls on his knee and holds it. That's comedy gold - and Luigi is perfect for this. It's almost a pleasure to watch him get hurt.

I tried adding in subtitles, but they cover up some of the action, so here is what Luigi is saying: "oh... oh no... oh... my leg... oh... oh... thank God... please, can you-" SLAM!

I wanted most of this to feel like the initial gameplay because I imagined this happening while you played the game. Like, imagine that you turn on your NES, and this happens. It would be hilarious... silly, and a little creepy to be honest. Like some kind of comedy ghost. Anyway, the idea is "what would happen if weird comedy happened in video games".

I used Final Cut Pro X and Photoshop exclusively, along with captured game footage (using OBS) to create this animation. It took quite awhile, since I had to edit the sprites pixel by pixel to make Luigi's mouth open and close. Mario was a lot easier, as I was able to just "play" his animation in with the game. From there, I did key framing to get Luigi to flip and open and close his mouth.
