My introduction to Mark was through the film "Purgatory Road". I saw that movie for the first time last year and I think it is a beautiful film that is a Horror film, but at its heart it's a family drama. That was the one key thing that I noticed about that film he co-wrote and directed...which was the genre did not make the film but rather the dark complexity behind the various characters we follow. And it wasn't necessary to side with them but rather to get a better understanding as to why they do what they do to understand their journey. Now this approach isn't unique to Mark, but what really got me gravitating to his work was the real dark side of human nature...the grey areas if you will, where you can judge the characters based on their principles, their set of values and the changes that causes them to look at things from a different perspective to give a deeper meaning behind their purpose. I got that vibe from his films like "Painkiller", "Stressed to Kill" and "Hitman's Hero". I have become a fan of Mark through his films, but it was really hearing him speak about his approach with filmmaking, storytelling and the business that truly made me understand him as an artist...I felt the same about another director who had left the same impression on me in Jesse V. Johnson. This was a great conversation I had with Mark about the changes that occur in the industry when it comes to making a film and having to get distributors to release the films meeting some criteria's, along with some of the challenges he goes through having to tell a story but having to make adjustments for the business side of it as well too. I hope anyone listening who is considering a career in the film industry takes notes on the amount of work that is required to prepare for the hardship that comes with field and truly know that this is a very hard and lonely path at times and it is not for the faint of heart. I love Mark's brutal honesty about the hardships that come with this career path but also see the enjoyment he gets out of this as well through this journey. Hope you all enjoy this awesome convo. Cheers.
