YouTube End Screens are Worthless
YouTube is now disallowing channels under 10k views from including external links in end screens. You shouldn't be worried about this, because YouTube end screens are worthless.
Check your YouTube Analytics for Traffic Sources. I dare you. How much traffic do you get from End Screens? For me, it's less than half of a percent, and when I asked on Twitter, Facebook, and even YouTube's Creator Community, I heard of similarly low numbers.
What does this mean? This means that if you expect to generate a meaningful amount of traffic from YouTube end screens (either to other videos, to subscriptions for your or others' channels, or to external sites such as Patreon), then you should reconsider how effective that strategy is.
Some people have claimed that perhaps the reason why end screens result in low traffic is because most people have low audience retention, so in this video, I also discuss a common misconception about audience retention: just because your audience retention may be far lower than 100%, that doesn't mean that no one is watching through the end of the video. Rather, that simply means that there are enough people watching very little of the video that, when averaged with those watching nearly all of the video, it averages out to a lower average.
You can check the Audience retention report in YouTube analytics by video to see what percentage of people are watching at any given time stamp. Definitely also check out Relative Audience Retention, because it will allow you to compare your video to other videos of the same length.
