This is a full playthrough of the Enhanced version of Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders by LucasFilm Games. This version only supports PC Speaker or Tandy sound and we are using Tandy sound. The game was originally developed for the Commodore 64 with 160x200 resolution graphics. Using the same chunky graphics found on the C64 version the game was originally ported to the PC Compatible platform in July of 1988.

The Enhanced version, with file dates from December 1988, uses a 320x200 16-color resolution graphics for greater detail but the gameplay and sound is the same as with the lower resolution version. This version appears to have been developed for MS-DOS/Tandy first, then the Atari ST and Amiga. This version's graphics would be redrawn in 256 colors and released with CD Audio music tracks for the FM Towns in 1991.

Zak has a fair amount of dead time including waiting for the airplane to land and for the lottery numbers to be drawn. We edited out the waiting time where nothing interesting was happening.

The ending is speed sensitive, if you play the game with too-fast video hardware you will end with Annie and Zak staring at each other in front of the machine and most of the ending messages not appearing. The beginning part of the ending music will also be skipped if the sound effect of the Caponian machine's destruction is still playing due to a too-fast machine. If you are playing the game in DOSBox with the Tandy machine type dial down the cycle count to 500 cycles just before triggering the ending sequence. With EGA/VGA machine types, you can go up as high as 1500 cycles, but you will not hear Tandy sound without modifying the executable. An 8MHz 286 Tandy 1000 like the TX, TL and TL/2 will play the ending sequence properly. LucasArts never fixed this bug, not even in the LucasArts Classic Adventures release.
