Zanac (PS1) - Score Trial Course 16 Clear (Hardest Fortress)
21The Zanac collection on PS1 also has "Score Trials" where you can try and post high scores for specific challenges. The hardest challenge by far is the final one, course 16, where you take on a version of the final fortress in the game.
What makes this so difficult, is that the game is set on max difficulty (no enemy cap whatsoever) while you start with no items except your basic shot. Your goal is to somehow take down this fortress under these conditions.
My strategy is to take out the "circle spawners" in the center of the fortress by suiciding the first few lives, as these are by far the biggest threat. From there, you basically need to just survive until the weapon carriers show up, which does take a bit of time. During this time you want to get as many power chips as possible as they give brief (1 second) periods of invincibility.
Keep grabbing these chips and hope you get upgraded to the wide shot. The specifics of how this occurs are somewhat complicated , and it seems random if you don't know what's going on. And indeed there is FAR too much going on to plan it out anyway.
Just survive long enough until the power up carriers start showing up and grab number 4. This is easily the best weapon to handle this boss as it cancels bullets in a large area. If you lose this it's basically over, so you can't die once you get it.
