Happy Halloween! I'm starting Zelda month early with this eerie track from Majora's Mask. It seemed fitting, haha.

As you may remember, this track plays when you meet the ghost of Sharp in Ikana Canyon. As he conducts the orchestra of the dead, Link's health is slowly drained and your only options are to flee the cave or pacify his restless soul with the Song of Storms. I think that most folks haven't heard the whole of Sharp's Curse because your first reaction upon hearing it is to get the heck out of that cave.

This scene in particular (with a handful of others) was so visceral and frankly disturbing when I first played this game at 12 years old. Right before the song plays, Sharp invites you to listen to the piece and join the ranks of the dead. So as the player, of course your first reaction is self-preservation by fleeing the cave or playing the Song of Storms on your ocarina. But you always have the option of simply staying in the cave and allowing this loathsome dirge to lull you into an eternal slumber.

The player is treated to a standard game over screen in this scenario, but I wondered what really happened to Link. Did he turn into a ghost or a zombie or something? A Gibdo?

The world of Majora's Mask is a depressing one. This game is known among Zelda fans as the darkest in the series and for that reason it's the favorite of many. It's my #2 (right behind LttP). But this sad and sometimes lifeless world makes me wonder about what sort of toll it took on Link as a character. Maybe eternal slumber preferable to wading through the darkness.

Aaannnd that's it for today's "Philosophy Corner". Tune in next time.

I did some experimenting while recording parts for this cover. As you've probably figured out, I reversed the guitar parts to give it an extra-spooky sound. That meant I had to learn the main melody backwards then reverse the audio so the notes would be correct. It was kinda fun, haha.

I also reversed the video for the guitar parts. I was hoping it would look a little cooler than it actually does. It kinda just looks like I'm playing the notes at the wrong time, haha. But one cool thing is that at the end it looks like I walk up to turn the camera off, but since it's reversed, I'm actually turning it on and walking backwards. So the end of that guitar take is actually the beginning. You can also see me clapping so I'd know where the next take was in the video.

I have at least one more video planned for Zelda month. It's another instrumental from Majora's Mask. I also have one with lyrics that I want to do, but it's going to be tricky since it's been done so many times. Don't want to make any promises until I have a better idea of whether or not it will work.

But yeah, thanks for watching, everyone. The next one should be out in a week or two. See you soon.
