Zoda's Revenge: Startropics II (NES) Chapter 1 & 2 Speedrun Walkthrough Guide by TheTantalus (Ep. 1)
2Welcome to the Startropics 2: Zoda's Revenge Speedrun guide!
In this episode, we go over the first two chapters, which involves a couple of skips as well as basic mechanics.
Buffering: Inputting a button press early and having the game act as soon as you are able to
Diagonals: You lose nothing for moving 2 directions at once! You do lose frames for turning though.
Short Hop: Like Mario or Smash or other games, shorter jumps can be done by doing a lighter button press.
The directions you need to go in the snowfield to avoid the mini dungeons: up right up right up up left up left left left up left left down left left down left left down left left down
Void Walk in the boar room setup:
Step 1: From the long room, hold diagonal up in room transition.
Step 2: Walk diagonal up to the top room without changing direction.
Step 3: Upon room entrance, buffer A+B+Up, then hold down left. Mike will jump straight up for a specific distance for about half of the jump then go the rest of the way down left. This triggers the boar to charge you. To ensure you don't accidentally walk a frame down or left after landing, we buffer that 2nd axe throw so that we can't move right away.
Step 4: As soon as you land, do a buffered b+up so that you throw an axe upwards. This also ensures you face up without moving up a pixel. If you are facing any other direction, the setup may not work properly. So it is important to face up here.
Step 5: Wait for the boar to touch you and inflict damage. When you take damage, buffer and up+left+a+start. This will jump mike up a set distance and then pause the game. You then need to buffer start+down and keep holding down. This will buffer an unpause so that you unpause on the first actionable frame and then you'll fall down onto the boar and if done correctly, you'll be on the water but not dead.
Step 6: Move up diagonal left a bit and jump over to the exit. Wow! You've done it!
Shape puzzle answer:
Circle, Circle, Triangle, Square, Circle, Square, Triangle. The room exits are: Left, Up, Up, Up, Right, Down, Down
Shorty Skip:
Mashing select has been my most successful method. If you come up with something better, let me know! The one thing that can go wrong (if you get the select glitch) is if you press right too early, you'll drop the screen prompt too early and the glitch won't happen. You need to wait for Shorty and the other kids to come up to you and then press right.
