Zombie Virus for Android is a free-to-play game that is hard to categorize. On the surface, there isn’t much strategy to the game, or base building, or RPG aspects, or combat, really. The story is very loose, and mostly focuses on zombies taking over the world. If I were to categorize this game, it’d be a basebuilder game, without the bases. Instead of bases, it would be zombies that you place inside small areas to attack people (which serves as the combat portion). Similar to base building games, there is limited gameplay, lots of menus, and microtransactions.
The game has an interesting twist on the zombie genre. Instead of people being attacked by zombies, or zombies themselves, you are people creating viruses, and thus zombies take over the world. This notion isn’t really explained, but it is a funny, if not particularly gruesome, idea. You start off by tapping and dragging zombies into crowded areas in Korea to spread the zombie plague. When you place a zombie down it starts attacking people and sometimes other people turn into zombies to help you start slaughtering more people, which in turn drop coins that you can use to further upgrade your zombies to make them stronger. For example, I upgraded my zombies to carry the shingles disease. However, I’m not sure how much sense that makes given victims that are bitten or attacked by zombies will have much more dire things to worry about (like turning into a zombie?).
So as the game progresses you move from location to location, and the main motivations to you as a player are upgrading your zombies and killing more people. It is pretty fun to watch your zombies kill and eat people, as audio effects of coins dropping and screams are quite prevalent, and matched by funny blood effects and people running around all over the place. But there isn’t really any strategy involved in the game besides picking upgrades; which is disappointing. Like I said before, these types of games are limited when it comes to gameplay.
