95Shot progress - Lionheart and Bellwether
The most important part of our job as animators is to understand and apply the director’s vision into frames; we try to print a performance that was originally imagined by them, and our job is to get our characters as close as possible to that idea. It’s suppose to be a straightforward process; we show our first blocking pass, we address some notes, and we polish the animation until everyone is satisfied. But sometimes our acting choices aren’t quite what was expected or the idea evolved into something else during this process, and then we start to spin while trying to achieve that goal.
I got stuck into this situation many times and one of them happened when I was animating the first of these shots from zootopia.
Mayor Lionheart was suppose to just turn to Bellwether and deliver his line while looking annoyed by her presence.
What seemed like a simple and quick task at first, took me way longer to finish and I had to animate several versions of it before reaching completion. (You can watch them on the second video)
There’re multiple reasons why this can happen; miscommunications in the process, story changes, dialogue changes, directors decided to go on different routes to make the movie better, or the surrounding shots required a different performance from your shot... the point is: get used to it.
Get comfortable with the idea that this will happen to you, again and again, use it as practice opportunity, a moment to explore new ideas and collaborate with the team.
And keep looking for ways to dodge these situations in the future.
I find it very helpful to really listen to what the directors have to say when they’re first issuing a new sequence, specially when they’re briefing the shots you’ll be responsible for.
Watching the layout sequence beforehand and asking questions about the sequence/shots/characters also helps. If you have ideas on how the shots could be done, sharing them sooner will give you a better chance of success, rather than trying those ideas in blocking and finding out too late that you were going in the wrong direction.
Ultimately, it’s all for a good reason: to make a great movie. 🍿
