0 Progress in 5 YEARS - The Decline of Mid Range GPUs
I think we can all agree that Nvidia’s progress with mid range graphics cards has been underwhelming to put it lightly, but what if I told you that depending on your PC you may actually gain 0 perceivable improvement in performance over the span of 5 years… Let’s talk about it.
So right now is a special time Because yes, were coming up on the 5 year anniversary of the RTX 2060 Super, a graphics card which launched for $399 all the way back on July 9th, 2019, and the funny thing about this graphics card is that if you compare its specs to the RTX 3060 and RTX 4060 which should have superseded it; though to be fair they are a bit cheaper, you’ll find that actually in some ways the 2060 Super still looks better and that's shocking to see after two whole generations of cards and roughly half a decade. I mean take a look at the memory which is still stuck at 8GB, and the memory bandwidth is even worse. Somehow memory bandwidth has reduced every generation when using the 2060 Super as a baseline, and sure the 3060 and 4060 have more cores, but the architectures are significantly different, so we really can't compare the amount of shaders.
Now according to TPU while the 3060 should be roughly on par with the 2060 Super, the 4060 on the other hand should be significantly faster coming in with over 20% more performance, but there's a catch.
Not only do most reviews base performance on average framerate rather than 1% or .01% lows where low memory capacity and bandwidth can cause big problems, but this is assuming your running a PCIe gen 4 system. See the RTX 4060 has unfortunately joined a growing list of GPUs which cuts its PCIe lanes in half down from 16 to just 8, and many people who would have bought a 2060 Super are likely still running PCIe gen 3 systems, meaning that you can only get half the bandwidth over PCIe.
This is an issue, because as channels such as Hardware unboxed have discovered especially for low VRAM cards this can negatively impact performance since they will more often be completely filling their VRAM and spilling over into your system memory, which means traveling across the PCIe lanes.
