The Beatles’ Yesterday is the most covered song of all time, and Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You, which pulls in between $2 to $3 million every holiday season, are also predictable money-makers.
But what about songs that amass fortunes in ways no one saw coming? These songs and the money they make will shock you. Today, we’re diving into five of the most unexpected high-grossing songs of all time—a. They aren’t the biggest money-makers of all time. However, they’ve all made enough to set up their respective artists for life. So let’s get started. So starting things off at #5, I’ve got a Halloween song that was released as a single in November 1983: Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Whatever you think of the man’s complicated legacy, you gotta give him props for doing something no one had done before… cashing in big time on Halloween. Thriller was a commercial juggernaut, by some estimates selling 120 million copies. It’s probably impossible to know for sure, but we all know that Thriller was big. Jackson reportedly made at least $134 million from the album in the two years following its release. The single "Thriller" contributed to this success, though specific earnings from just the single are anybody’s guess. According to the RIAA and the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, Thriller has generated over $1.5 billion in revenue since its release, which includes album sales, singles sales, and streaming revenue.
