1 IMPRESSIONS... 5 Years Later: Real Racing 3 [ANDROID]
Real Racing 3 [ANDROID]

This is from my first few sessions revisiting Real Racing 3 after 5 years away.
I originally played this when it came out on an Ipod Touch 5, back when it was an Apple Store exclusive. The game was brilliant. Great physics, and a set of mechanics that allowed for a Free2Play grind that meant you could actually earn about 70-80% of everything in the game without dropping a penny.
100% was possible if you sunk insane amounts of grind time in, to break through that final Gold Coin barrier.
The game was good enough that I felt compelled to throw money at a microtransaction. Not out of desperation, but to support the developers... the game was GOOD!
My memory is hazy, but I am pretty sure they sold a couple of "Car Packs" back then as well. And I mean "Pack"... as in several cars for $30 or whatever it was.
I threw a rage quit at the game because of some pretty huge changes for the worse.
The "Servicing" system on cars changed from individual components like Tyre Wear, Engine Wear, Oil Change, body damage, etc... there were 6 things that could wear down, faster or slower depending on your driving style and skill. That was traded out for a single Service bar, which suddenly started to wear out much more quickly.
As you can see from where I go through the achievements in this video, despite my current level being in the teens in 2019, I was well above Level 250 back in year 1 (I played this A LOT to, from... at work). I had reached a point where I owned almost all of the cars, and completed 100% of the career events and things....
... until, new content started being released during the post Year 1 overhaul. New events that required new cars.... that cost stupid amounts of Gold Coins ONLY to purchase. I purchased one of them (can't remember which one now), to find that most of the upgrade phases also restricted your choice to using more, ridiculous amounts of Gold Coins ONLY to upgrade a part to the next phase.. or just not be able to progress any further because the upgrades are 100% a requirement to continue to be competitive.
And ON TOP OF THAT, the cosmetic side of the game received another overhaul... in which nothing new was really added, just the individual cost of everything went up... and all of my paint/rim/etc. choices were not only reset to this default brown for all 82 of my cars back then, I had to go in and individually unlock every single rim, every paint colour...
And on top of even that... they introduced the DRIVE token system... limiting the amount of times you could race without either buying another race token, or watching an advert, or just waiting for the DRIVE tokens to replenish so you could have another race. This is a play-limiting mechanic I ABSOLUTELY HATE. The absence of that token system is what made RR3 stand alone as a true GAME on the mobile platform, and not another throwaway money grubbing trash title. So you were now "replay" time limited to Servicing wait times AND these DRIVE tokens (unless your car was fully upgraded)... both of which could be reset/refilled by just throwing a few GOLD COINS....
It was just red flag after red flag that said... "The only way you can keep playing this now, and get anything NEW out of the game, will require spending stupid amounts of money on microtransactions."
FULL PAY 2 WIN TRASH by 2014.
Fast forward to 2019. I have time at work again to keep myself amused with playing games... and I'm not impressed with the racers out there. 98% of all games on the Mobile market are Pay2Win trash... that's a simple fact. But putting that aside, most racing games handle like trash. Most mobile games in general are useless, gimmicky, anti-skilled trash.
So I thought I'd try RR3 again because I have such fond memories of driving Mount Panorama, Laguna Seca, etc.... and I was curious if the game was as good as I remembered it being.
The short answer in terms of handling is YES. The new Formula 1 car I tried for the first time was also incredibly grippy... and the cool thing is it actually makes you FEEL like it is grippy... thanks to the solid physics engine they created in this game.
I also came back to discover ALL of my progress had been reset. I retained the currency and cars I had last, when rage quitting... but all the campaigns, all the races, record of gold/silver/win/loss trophies... RESET.
On the one hand that's a good thing because I can go through, at my leisure, and just re-earn more R$ and Gold Coins from re-doing all of that content.
On the other... it is kind of sad to see all those 250+ levels lost.
It is very obvious that the shameless Pay2Win ethos of EA has just gotten worse in the game... they have since introduced a THIRD currency into the mix with the $R and Gold Coins... I am curious to see what I grind out as I enjoy my already impressive collection of cars
