In this episode, we unbox, evaluate, clean, and rate games that we purchased from Video Games Monthly for September of 2023.

What do you do if you don't have video game conventions, swap meets, flea markets, or retro video game stores in your area and you want to collect retro video games? Well, Video Games Monthly is here to deliver a solution right to your doorstep. With Video Games Monthly you can select games from a number of different systems, all the way back to the Intellivision and Atari 2600 forward to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The best thing about it, this is not a rental service, you get to keep the games.

There are four different tiers of service you can sign up for, three games for $34.99 a month, four games for $44.99 a month, five games for $54.99 a month, and 10 games for $74.99 a month. We subscribe to the $ 34.99-a-month plan, and with tax and shipping, it costs us about $45. My goal with each box is to at least break even, so if I'm spending $45 I want to get $45 worth of games. Some months they hit that mark, some months they just miss it, and other months they exceed it.

What we got:
Super Famicom:
Super Donkey Kong (Loose)
Value: $9

Nintendo Entertainment System
Airwolf (Loose)
Value: $8

Wii U
Gianna Sisters: Twisted Dreams Director's Cut (SEALED)
Value: $14

Nintendo Wii
Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (CIB)
Value:$8

Nintendo GameCube
Crash Nitro Kart (Game & Case)
Value: $12

Value for all games:
$51

What do we think:
In terms of the quality of games, this is probably one of the best boxes I've ever gotten from Video Games Monthly. There's something here that I would play from every game. While the dollar value isn't high on the individual games, these are not terrible games. Probably the only thing I would call a stinker would be Airwolf, and even that is a halfway decent game.

One of the issues I have had with Video Games Monthly over the years is the cleanliness of the games, whether that be the pins on cartridges or discs. The Airwolf game looked beautiful, and I was extremely happy with the condition of that. Super Donkey Kong definitely needed some extra TLC with all the gunk and junk that was on the pins. I know they indicate that they do a cursory cleaning of all their games before they ship them out, and quite honestly standard cleaning would not have gotten these pins cleaner than what they were out of the box. Thankfully I was able to use Bright Boy to get off the extra carbon buildup and dirt to prevent that from getting into my system.

The disc-based games were a mixed bag. Obviously, Gianna Sisters is sealed so that disc should not have any issues whatsoever. Both LEGO Star Wars and the Crash Nitro Kart game had signs of disk polishing fluid buildup around the center hole. I really wish they would do a better job of wiping that off the discs. Crash Nitro Kart also had a few leftover smudges and scratches on the face of the disc, which left me concerned about whether or not the game would actually play. Thankfully it did, but that initial concern was still real.

From a value standpoint, I'd rate this month's box a solid B, cleanliness I would put a C, and value I would put at a B-. In recent months they have increased their shipping charges, meaning they need to improve the quality of games included to make sure that people get value for what they're paying for.

What do you think of our Video Games Monthly box this month? Are there any of these games that you've played or that you like or dislike? Let me know in the comment section.
