10 Ancient Temples That Have Yet To Be Discovered
10 Ancient Temples That Have Yet To Be Discovered
10.The First Temple - Ark of the Covenant
The Ark of the Covenant is perhaps one of the most sought after historical artefacts of all time. It’s also been known as the Ark of Testimony, and in a few translations, even the Ark of God. It’s basically a gold-covered wooden chest with a lid cover, that contains the two stone tablets of the Ten Commandments, as well as Aarons rod and a pot of Manna, as according to the Hebrew bible. No one knows where the Ark of the Covenant ended up, if it even truly exists, though some believe it may have been in Solomon’s Temple. The location of Solomon’s Temple has never been discovered. It’s thought to have been up on The Temple Mount near Jerusalem, it is an incredibly holy site and one that has held other temples in the past.
The temple in question was supposedly destroyed in 587 BC, when the Babylonians sacked Jerusalem, and no one knows what happened to the Ark of The Covenant itself. Most, however, state it must have been taken away to Babylon and then never brought back. If that is the case, then the temple that the Ark of the Covenant was taken to in Babylon has also never been discovered. It may be that humanity never again manages to find this ancient holy artefact and the temple that has hidden it from our eyes for so many millennia.
9. Chau Srei Vibol
If you want to explore a temple that has the classic lost adventure feel to it, then there’s no better than the Chau Srei Vibol Hindu temple in Cambodia. This temple was built at the end of the 11th century, and sits around 17 kilometers to the east of the colossal Angkor Wat. This temple is, for the most part, heavily overgrown and destroyed and is much less visited than the colossal Angkor Wat because it’s a little bit less accessible.
Why would this temple, which we clearly know about, be on our list at all? Well, because it’s still being explored and excavated to this very day. The temple itself is on top of a small hill, one that requires some light climbing to get to. There has been very little research really done on Chau Srei Vibol, though Ground Penetrating Radar has showed evidence that there may be destroyed structures deeper within the hill that the temple sits on. What secrets lay at rest below the ground on this Cambodian hill? We may never know, as everyone’s attention and time is usually taken up by Angkor Wat instead.
8.The Kukulkan Chamber
The El Castillo Pyramid, also known as the Temple of Kukulcan is an incredibly popular tourist destination. In fact, it’s the most famous Myan Pyramid temple in Mexico and has been incredibly well explored. Well, most of it has, anyway. In 2016 experts discovered that the Temple of Kukulcan was hiding more than they expected, and was in fact three layers of pyramids, not just the one that you can see.
Built in three stages, each centuries apart, this temple is more like a russian nesting dol than anything else. The smallest pyramid, the one right at the center, was likely built between 550 and 800 AD, right as the Mayan civilization was reaching its peak. As of yet, researchers have not managed to penetrate the central pyramid, and they might not have all that long left to try and divulge its secrets. The El Castillo pyramid was, like many Mayan temples, built atop a sinkhole, which could eventually lead the mysterious structure to sink below the ground and make its innermost chambers lost to us for the rest of time.
7. Nero’s Sphinx Room
In 2019 it was found that, under the Palace of Emperor Nero, there was a secret hidden underground chamber. The palace was built on the ashes of a catastrophic fire in Rome, and before 2019 there was no idea that a secret room dedicated to the multiple mythic figures had been constructed underground. The chamber was uncovered while archaeologists were restoring a nearby room, and was quite a shock to all involved.
The vault-like chamber ceiling was 15 foot high and covered with colourful images of imaginary and real creatures. There were centaurs dancing across the walls, and even depictions of the pagan god Pan. At the moment it is completely uncertain what the room may have been used for, and we may never actually find out. The bulk of the room has been covered in dirt, and researchers believe that removing this compacted earth poses a risk for the greater stability of the entire palace.
