Number 10 – The Italian Pot of Gold

A pot of gold was found in the basement of an old Italian theatre. This pot is not figurative like we say in everyday conversations. It is real.

Archaeologists discovered a pot containing 300 gold coins in Como, northern Italy. Since this pot may have existed since the 5th century, decay and spoilage were expected of it.

After this pot was dug out, contrary to what archaeologists thought, every single coin miraculously glowed even after staying in the ground for hundreds of years. The coins may have been minted during the reign of mighty Roman emperors like Libio Severo, Valentinian III, Antonio, and Leon I. The worth of these coins are placed at millions of euros but who sells out such a treasure as this for instant gratification? Not the Italians!

Number 9 - Viagra

One common denominator amongst unexpected discoveries is that in their bid to solve a problem

Let's talk about Viagra for a minute. You would not believe that the initial aim of this drug was not to increase the libido. What then was it manufactured for?

Pfizer pharmaceutical company got into research for a single medicine to cure chest pain. After a careful experiment, they came up with a pill named UK92480 to constrict the arteries, thereby the relieving pain in the chest. Unfortunately, when this drug was tested on humans, it failed, but the side effect was astonishing.

The people who took this drug never felt the same afterwards; that's if you know what I mean. Today, men with erectile dysfunction have a reason to smile, all thanks to Viagra.

So, why would this drug be called a failure if it solves another problem? Without mincing words, in 2013 alone, Pfizer sold about $288 million worth of this drug.

Number 8 - Noah's ark has semblance with the great pyramid.

The biblical story of Noah's ark is a popular one. If you are not a Christian, you may have stumbled upon this story on history books or did personal research about this ark.

Now, discoveries suggest that this ark goes contrary to what we initially believed. When a 2,000-year-old text was retrieved, illustrations on the book showed that Noah might have modelled the ark after the Pyramids of Egypt. Noah's ark had a pointed tip similar to the Pyramids of Egypt. Did we get the wrong information about the real looks of Noah's arks? What is the relationship between Noah's ark and the great pyramid of Egypt? There is more to the pyramid of Egypt that meets the eye.

Number 7 - Saccharin

What is sweeter than sugar? The answer is not far-fetched. Saccharin is 400 times sweeter than sugar. Like Pemberton, Constantine Fahlberg was in the lab analyzing specimens of coal tar in 1878 when something intriguing happened.

After a hard day's job at the lab, this young scientist forgot to wash his hand. Thankfully, he did not handle a dangerous chemical, and so, this unexpected discovery did not turn out to be a tragedy.

Fahlberg later noticed that all he touched that day tasted sweet. It was more than a coincidence. He was bent on identifying what chemical must have altered the taste of all he touched. He got back to the lab the next day for further research. He tasted all the substances he used the previous day and found that a combination of ammonia, phosphorus chloride, and o-sulfobenzoic was responsible for the sweet taste.

Today, survivors of World war 1 are grateful to this artificial sweetener for coming to their rescue at a time sugar was rationed. Not only did this artificial sweetener come to the rescue during World War 1, but it is also used as a viable replacement for sugar for diabetic patients. Mistakes are made in heaven!
