We can't get enough of outer space. For every time an astronomer makes that long, tedious journey to the unknown, we expect to hear a couple of exciting mysteries. As always, the universe never disappoints! Funny enough, our planet is only a fraction of the peculiar happenings roaming around the cosmos. Even at that, we may not unravel all the truths about our world in hundreds of years to come.
In this video, we look at some of the weird things found in space and give possible explanations about them. Ready? Grab a pack of popcorn and enjoy the ride!
10. Elst-Pizarro
The difference between asteroids and comets is glaring. Asteroids are solid lumps of metal and rock that can infiltrate our planet and can kill dinosaurs. They are found in the solar system between Jupiter and Mars. Comets are icy bodies that form outside the solar system. Asides from the known asteroids and comets, a new object called Elst-Pizarro has defied usual explanations. It was discovered in 1979, where it was first classified as an asteroid. Further examinations in 1996 showed that it had a tail just like a comet.
Initially, astronomers thought the tail resulted from a collision instead of something from the sun's heat. Over time, the tail changed in structure and brightness to prove that it is an ongoing process. The object completed a full spin in a whopping three and a half hours. The possible explanation for this new object is that a collision exposed some subsurface ice on the body, gradually being lost to space. While some astronomers think this new object is an asteroid posing as a comet, others believe otherwise. To settle this argument, scientists hope to launch the Castalia spacecraft in 2028 to have a closer look.

9. Tabby's star
Oumuamua isn't the only object that has been a subject of debate for many years now. Other extraterrestrials have also been implicated in the dimming of Tabby's star. The star is located about 1,500 light-years from the earth and was named after Tabetha Boyajian, an astronomer. She was the lead author in a study that showed that the star occasionally dimmed at 22 percent. Over the decades, the brightness has faded slowly. What then causes the star to dim? One theory is that a swarm of comets is getting into the solar system's inner region, thus, producing dust in the process. It is the dust that prevents some of the star's light from reaching us.
Another school of thought considers the culprit as megastructures built by advanced aliens to harvest the star's energy. However, Bodman has rejected this notion saying that more light is blocked at the blue than the red end of the spectrum. Further analysis of the light spectrum linked to long-term dimming shows larger dust grains. In other words, there could be complex different-sized dust grains blocking varying amounts of light as the orientation changes. The dust source is a mystery, and science has no obvious explanation for what is going on.

8. FRB 121102
Another phenomenon scientists are having a hard time explaining is the fast radio bursts. As their name implies, they are rapid peeps of radio waves that last only a few milliseconds. The first of its kind was picked up in 2007, and since then, researchers have been struggling to explain them. FRB comes from outside the Milky Way, which is millions of light-years apart. To capture attention, they release as much energy as the sun does in 80 years.
While scientists tried to make meaning out of FRB, the universe threw another puzzle at us. A burst known as FRB 121102 originating from a galaxy located around three billion light-years away repeated itself. In August 2017, it repeated 93 times, therefore, ruling out the possibility of a single cause; it then led researchers to believe that the FRB is caused by materials falling into black holes or rapidly rotating neutron stars. In October 2018, 19 non-repeating FRBs were announced, but further studies into their properties would help us understand the cataclysmic process causing them.
7. Galaxy x
It is an astronomer's delight to discover new objects by identifying the effects on their neighbors. If not for the influence of Uranus, Neptune wouldn't be discovered. When astronomers saw ripples in the Milky Way disc in 2009, they thought it to be a disrupter. In 2015, they found a clue to the odd ripples; it was a dark dwarf galaxy orbiting the Milky Way and altering the galaxy's motion with its gravitational pull.
