Cabin Fever is a classic story of an independent film that turns out to be very successful. There’s a sequel, prequel, and even a remake of the film. That being said, let’s take a look at 10 things you didn’t know about Cabin Fever (2002).
#1 - After filming a scene, Rider Strong decided to take a little break from the set so he went on a walk through the woods -- all while still being covered in blood. He happened to run into a group of 35 schoolgirls that were on a field trip in the middle of those woods, which freaked them all out and they started to scream. However, once the girls realized he was Shawn from the popular television show, Boy Meets World, their screams only got louder as they chased him through the woods. Eventually, he made it back to the set, swearing that he would never venture off-set again.
#2 - While shooting The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King, Peter Jackson stopped the entire production on three separate occasions to screen Cabin Fever for the entire film crew. Jackson loved the film so much that he even gave Eli Roth publicity quotes.
#3 - A crew member for the film, Robert Jones, actually decided to take home a decapitated body prop that had been made for the film. While driving, he was pulled over by cops and they held him at gunpoint -- thinking that the prop was a real dead body. Once they found out that it was just a prop, they let him go.
#4 - Cabin Fever was inspired by actual events. While Eli Roth was 19-years-old he began working on a horse farm in Iceland. He contracted a horrible skin infection that literally caused his skin to peel off while he was shaving one day.
#5 - Things got very heated on-set between Director Eli Roth and actress Cerina Vincent. Roth wanted her to be completely nude during her sex scene with Rider Strong, but she refused, saying that she had recently appeared as a completely nude student in the film Not Another Teen Movie. She was worried that if she got naked for Cabin Fever that she would become typecast as a “nude-scene chick”. Eventually, Cerina threatened that it was a dealbreaker for her and that if Roth insisted on nudity in the scene, he would have to find another actress.
They were eventually able to come to a compromise, with the actress saying that she would allow one-inch of her ass to be shown on film. Roth took this so seriously that he busted out a ruler, measured exactly one-inch of her buttcrack and taped the sheets to her ass. Later, she’d go on to volunteer to show her breasts in the infamous bathroom scene because she thought it would make it more realistic.
#6 - The infamous pancakes scene featuring Matthew Helms was never meant to be in the film. However, Eli Roth saw Helms practicing Tae Kwon Do during a break and found out that he was actually a black belt, so he added the scene to the film, allowing Helms to show off his skills.
#7 - Speaking of Matthew Helms, he is now a male ballerina. Thankfully, he axed the awful hairdo.
#8 - I know this is going to be hard to picture -- really hard. But Deputy Winston was originally going to be played by Eli Roth. Luckily, Giuseppe Andrews was so impressive during his audition that they had to cast him for the role.
#9 - When the character Jeff grabs the beer off the top of the fridge and abandons his friends, you’ll be happy to know that the brand of beer is “Arrogant Bastard Ale.”
#10 - The man in the bunny suit in the film is listed in the credits as “We will never tell,” and no one ever did. It’s still unknown to this day who played The Bunny Man.
And that’s it for our list of things you never knew about Cabin Fever. Did we totally blow your mind? Did we disappoint? Maybe you know a cooler piece of info that we left out?
