10 Things You Didn’t Know About Donkey Kong Country (in text form)

10. In the first Donkey Kong Country game, Diddy Kong was originally going to be Donkey Kong Junior. Nintendo felt that Rare's redesign was too different from the appearance of Donkey Kong Jr. and mandated that Rare either use Donkey Kong Jr.'s original appearance, or change the character's name, which Rare decided would be best. The potential names were Diet DK, DK Lite, Titchy Kong and Dinky Kong. Dinky Kong was almost the final name, but was dropped due to legal considerations.

9. There's an old-fashioned record player in a hidden area at the end of World 1-3, near the secret exit in Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze. It strongly resembles Cranky Kong's record player seen in the original Donkey Kong Country, and will even play the same tune if the player pounds the ground next to it.

8. Donkey Kong Country 2 was originally planned for the Virtual Boy, but scrapped after only 3 weeks of development due to the commercial failure of the console. Some work had been done on the title screen, and it's unknown if any of the design work was later used for the SNES version.

7. When visiting Wrinkly Kong's Save Cave in Donkey Kong Country 3, she can be seen playing a Nintendo 64, and "Inside the Castle Wall" (Peach's Castle Theme) plays on the background. It can be assumed that she's playing Super Mario 64.

6. There is a scrapped Kremling character which has been dubbed by fans as "Mr. X". He appeared in Issue 76 of Nintendo Power but is nowhere in Donkey Kong Country 2. He appears in the German instruction booklet where it reads, "Kennt ihn oder hat ihn irgendwo schon einmal gesehen", which translates into, "No one knows him or has seen him anywhere before."

5. According to the manual of Donkey Kong Land, the whole game was made because Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong had a bet with Cranky Kong that they could have fun even without "fancy graphics" and "modern music" like in Donkey Kong Country.

4. In the settings menu of Donkey Kong Country Returns, an island is shown that is said to be based on the Rare logo, possibly to pay homage to the developers of the previous Donkey Kong Country titles.

3. In the international release of Donkey Kong Country, the title screen shows Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong swinging on a rope. In the Japanese version, it says Super Donkey Kong (the Japanese name for Donkey Kong Country) and shows Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong walking with Rambi, Squawks and Expresso with a Slippa and some Zingers following them.

2. In the background of the Foggy Fumes level in Donkey Kong Country Returns, there appears to be the skull of the mini-boss "Crocomire" from Super Metroid.

1. When you go to Bazaar's General Store and buy a shell in Donkey Kong Country 3, you have the option to ask him about the castle in the distance. He'll tell you about it for 2 coins, but if you decline he'll tell you something much more interesting: Are you sure? Some cheeky lad called Link was in just last week and he asked about the castle too. He didn't have enough coins, but he seemed such a nice fellow that I agreed to accept 500 rupees instead. After that he left... muttering about my shells being the wrong shape or something. Oh well! This is a reference to The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening in which sea shells were collectible items.
