10 Tips and Tricks to get Started in Outriders
10 Tips and Tricks to get started in Outriders
1 – Try not to get lost
Outriders isn’t open world, but it also doesn’t have the most user friendly map, so getting lost is still a possibility. Make sure to use UP button on the D-pad (Tab on PC) to lead you to your next mission waypoint. This tracks your objective with a white line that will lead you straight to your destination. Just make sure you have the right mission selected on the main map or you’ll still be heading in the wrong direction. Holding the button will lead you to the Party objective if you’re playing with friends.
2 – Don’t forget about your Melee abilities.
Melee attacks in most games are fairly basic, but in Outriders it counts as a power or skill. Just click in the Right stick on your controller or F on the keyboard if you’re playing on PC. If you melee an individual enemy then you inflict a status effect on them, and if use it while running you create a small area of effect attack which applies that same status effect to enemies within range. If you find yourself frozen or inflicted with Ash at any point, then your melee attack can get you out of it.
3 – Don’t worry too much about ammo.
Ammo can be scarce in a lot of games, but in Outriders your abilities tend to do more damage than a lot of the weapons you use. Ammo chests are littered across the game and they replenish your entire ammo reserves each time you open one. Enemies drop ammo as well, so it’s rare that you run out. An exceptional to this rule is the Sniper Rifle (especially Automatic Sniper Rifles) so make your sniper shots count.
4 – Class points can be reallocated
The Class point system is well thought out and fairly straight forward. While many Looter Shooters require some sort of currency to reset you skill tree, Outriders allows you to do it on fly from the menu and doesn’t cost anything to reset.
5 – Don’t take the Class descriptions too seriously.
While each class has a recommended range and focus, don’t worry too much about sticking to the playstyle. Each class has 8 skills in total and many of them allow for a lot of experimentation. A melee Technomancer (who is described as a long range class) may work better for you than a Melee Trickster or Devastator for example. Focus more on what abilities you’re interested in when starting a new character, and work from there.
6 – Roll to Extinguish fire
Certain enemies throw grenades or even have fire-based attacks like Flame Throwers or Powers. Getting set on fire eats away at your health, so make sure to rolls a few times to get rid of the effect. The other status weaknesses are similar with Bleed disappearing after standing still, Toxic disappearing after healing, as well as freeze and Ash mentioned above.
7 – Item Levels aren’t important…yet.
Your item level may affect your damage and other stats, but what you really want is blue or higher rarity items which augment your existing abilities. If you dismantle them you can collect the mods attached, but keeping different items with different mods at first allows you to upgrade them when crafting unlocks for the full game. A handy mod on one of the pieces of armor on my devastator allows me to use the Earthquake ability a second time in between cooldowns as an example.
8 – Use Shoulder Snap
Not every obstacle is cover, so use the Swap Camera option to make yourself less of a target. Just press in the Left Stick while aiming down sites and maybe you can avoid some enemy fire and stay against a wall to avoid being hit. It changes your view so at the very least it will be handy when you’re being rushed by enemies to see from a different perspective.
9 – Don’t worry about a lack of enemies or chests.
If you finished the demo you’ll notice that enemies in an area are only active when you restart a quest. The Demo only showcases ONE of the area maps in the game but In the full game all enemies AND chests respawn once you leave the area map and return later.
10 – Go through the guide
While the Demo is quite extensive and fun, many of the mechanics in the game aren’t available or mentioned until you play the full game. Go through the guide from the starting Menu and you’ll find loads of other useful information. For example, only humanoid enemies have a tendency to use cover and your stash can be used to transfer items to your other characters in the full game.
