However, in video game terms, getting more than you bargained for isn’t always sunshine and roses. Bonus levels have been around almost as long as video games themselves, offering up juicy little addendums to a game’s main content. They serve a variety of purposes – some were added as an opportunity to amass extra points, while others were designed with nothing but fun in mind. Even so, they’re not always as positive as they were undoubtedly intended to be, and some of these so-called rewards end up feeling like punishments, instead.
