0Yooka-Laylee is a collectathon platformer game developed Playtonic Games which seeks to recreate the nostalgic gameplay of the mascot platformers that dominated the 90s era of gaming. The Story revolves around the titular character, Yooka and Laylee in their adventure to retrieve and collect the lost pages of their magical book while being opposed to by Capital B, his vice president Dr. Quack and henchmen. Meeting different friends and foes alike, guide Yooka and Laylee in visiting different and diverse worlds which will challenged your minds in solving its unique puzzles.
True to its goals, Yooka-Laylee’s gameplay and puzzles are great and diverse. Its cartoonish graphics, animation and environment also mesh well with the theme of the game. The titular protagonists are an interesting duo which, although not as impactful like banjo-kazooie or spyro, pretty much represents the stereotypical MCs of the said classic genre. The different worlds and its mechanic of extending its worlds are good in my opinion. However, the game was not received well by critics by having a 68 in PS4 and 73 both in PC and Xbox. Critics point out that although the game showed smoothly the nostalgic gameplay of collectathon games, it brought with its problems as well including the awful camera and some awkward gameplay controls. In addition, the game was criticized for its few worlds and short campaign which affects the fun factor of the game. Overall and in my opinion, it is a decent game which somehow revitalized a dying if not forgotten genre.
