#1078 Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance (PS2) Hidden Characters (4/11): Raiden gameplay.
Gameplay of the hidden character Raiden in PS2 version of Midway’s/Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance.
Yeah, Raiden as a hidden character. A bit of a surprising choice, but given that this is a sort of pseudo soft-reboot it vaguely makes sense. That said, you are taking one of the most beloved characters in the series and making them hidden, which is a slightly bizarre decision. As I said before, Deadly Alliance is pretty damn experimental in that regard.
Raiden’s design here might be great, but he’s pretty bland apart from that. In terms of special moves he has a command grab (f, f, Square), a lighting projectile (b, f, Square) and…a lightning variant of Sub-Zero’s shoulder charge. Yeah. No teleportation, and not even his trademark lightning torpedo. He’s a great example of why I consider these the 3D MK games on the underwhelming side; they get a little too grounded at times and a lot of the zany fun of the 2D MK games is lost as a result. Much of this will be repaired in Deception, luckily, but it almost feels like they played it too straight with this game. As a weapon Raiden has a staff, which is a little too good as it has one of the easiest combos in the game, Circle x3. Yep. Just spam that to your heart’s content and you’ll take down most regular opponents, especially considering it deals 15% total damage each time. A bizarre design choice, like so many others in this game. Raiden isn’t bad at all therefore, but there is something a bit neutered about his character. It’s not quite Raiden without him charging towards you and shouting gibberish.
I’d also like to note that fatalities have a horribly inconsistent input in this game. Even when I played through this game on my Gamecube I could never quite do the input every time, it’s bloody annoying. It’s an issue which is fixed in later games, though it’s still pretty frustrating here.
Up next, another returning character who’s had a few odd design changes.
