#1081 Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance (PS2) Hidden Characters (7/11): Nitara gameplay.
Gameplay of the hidden character Nitara in PS2 version of Midway’s/Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance.
Ah, the new characters. There’s one consistent with the 3D MK games, and that’s that the new characters are always a mixed bag. And by mixed bag I mean they’re nearly always shit, or pale in comparison to the character they’re attempting to take over from. There’s a real lack of creativity to them which could only come about as a result of the constraints the 3D MK games went through, given that the majority of them are pretty bland on the whole, or simply undercooked in terms of result.
Nitara is a good example of this, as she is a generic dragon-lady. Her appearance is somehow sexualised and yet dull at the same time; it’s like little to no effort really went into her, and they simply decided to construct a generic female character, but give her wings. She’s not important to the story in the slightest, and doesn’t appear again (legitimately) in a canon MK title after this game, making her pretty redundant as a character. In fact, none of the hidden new characters return again legitimately. Goddamn this game is a graveyard of underbaked ideas.
On the one hand, changing up characters from game to game isn’t a bad idea. The KOF series did it, and the ability to go back to certain games to play as exclusive characters is pretty fun and rewarding. The problem with the 3D MK games is that it’s just a bit too experimental, and they get rid of a lot of stuff before it can fully develop. Don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater, as they say.
In terms of special moves, she has a generic split kick attack, and she can…spit blood. Ahahaha, what the fuck. It’s a good example of a developer trying to make a character cool without understanding the implications of their decisions. You see, spitting or coughing up blood is typically associated with being a symptom of a fatal illness known as Tuberculosis, which usually left sufferers pale and weak and eventually resulting in death. I guess that makes Nitara the first tuberculosis-suffering character since Samurai Shodown’s Ukyo. It's honestly one of the most ridiculous special moves in existence, with possibly only Drahmin's ridiculous projectile topping it.
Her weapons are a pair of “kama”, which are basically Japanese scythes, and not dramatically interesting. Nitara is a pretty negligible character on the whole; so utterly generic and ignorable that she’s sums up most of my complaints of this era of Mortal Kombat.
We will be seeing Nitara again, though. More on that in the next game.
Next up, Ed Boon’s most hated character.
