This video shows some gameplay from the game 1080 Avalanche for the Nintendo Gamecube. The game modes shown in the video are Match Race and Gate Challenge.

Match Race is a 1 on 1 racing mode. The point is simply to beat your 1 other opponent to the finish line. Although I was initially disapointed you only can race against one other person in this mode in singleplayer, I later started to enjoy this mode quite a bit. There are not that many maps to race on, but they all have multiple paths and are designed very well. They have lots of hidden shortcuts that you will never find until you play a particular level several times.

In this mode you do a few normal one on one races, but the last race in the series for each Match Race difficulty level ends with a race against an avalanche. You have to go fast enough through the level so that the avalanche which is pursuing you down the mountain does not overtake you and end your race. This type of race looks really cool, but can be a bit frustrating sometimes.

The other game mode shown in this video is called Gate Challenge. Here you try to make it through ever gate in the level as fast as you can. Each gate also acts like a checkpoint and adds seconds to your time left, so if you miss several in a row your timer will count to zero and you will have to start over. This mode is suprisingly fun because it forces you to race with much more control than in the normal races. It forces you to learn the level and anticipate turns before they show up. The game motivates you to do well in these because you win trophies for good times. If you win enough trophies you unlock special snowboards like the NES board or the Penguin board.

This game kind of makes a terrible first impression. It looks like there is barely any content to the game, and the controls do not feel as intuitive as they could be. But after a few hours I found myself enjoying this game more and more. It looks beautiful, has a decent soundtrack, and once you get used to the odd controls it becomes quite fun.
