10gb LAN on PCIE 3.0 x2
This video takes a look at the minimum number of PCIE 3.0 lanes needed for 10Gbps LAN. Almost all 10g NICs are PCIE x4. This is mainly due to compatibility with PCIE Gen 2. Some newer motherboards include a PCIE 3.0 x2 slot which at first glance seems strange but it turns out these are excellent for adding 10Gb ethernet to the motherboard.
In general the following applies for running 10Gbps provided the NIC supports up to Gen 4.
PCIE 2.0 x4
PCIE 3.0 x2
PCIE 4.0 x1
