Predator is the titular character of the 1987 action film, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers. The origin of Predator as a film is pretty funny; it originally started as a goofy, hypothetical film about Rocky Balboa taking on an alien opponent, as he had no one left to fight on earth. It instead ended up as a kind of mix between the Rambo films and the Alien films, and saw a group of mercenaries haunted down in a South American forest by the predator himself. It’s not nearly as scary as Alien, as but it definitely has its moments, and it’s a pretty good film on the whole given that it’s a weird mix between action and horror, reminiscent in that way of James Cameron’s Aliens. There were also a few sequels, but we don’t talk about them. I’ll talk more about the Alien and Predator connection next time, as I think it’ll be more appropriate there.
As for the predator himself, eh, not too impressed with him personally. He has some decent combos, but I really didn’t care for his special moves, and personally I couldn’t really suss out his playstyle, if that makes sense. They also seemed to go for the weird big-headed predators from the Alien vs. Predator film franchise here for some reason, which I never really thought was a good look; they always looked slenderer in other adaptions, notably Capcom’s excellent beat-em-up of the same name.
Also of note, Jax even got a Carl Weathers costume here, and of course Arnie himself eventually ended up in MK11, which made me ridiculously happy. The “YOU SON OF A BITCH” line from Predator always makes me crack up now due to how many Arnie prank calls I’ve listened to over the years. Which, uh, by this point is too many to count. Lastly, Jean Claude Van Damme was originally going to play the Predator in the original film! There are a few on-set pictures of this floating around the internet, too. He left after only a couple of days however, and would instead sign-on to a little film called Bloodsport, and the rest is history. Follow your heart, as they say.
