#1146 Mortal Kombat X (Steam) MK DLC Characters (2/7): Bo Rai Cho gameplay.
Gameplay of the DLC character Bo Rai Cho in the Steam/PC Port of Netherrealm Studio’s Mortal Kombat X.
“He’s a fat fuck and I hate him” – MrGStar on Bo Rai Cho.
Bo Rai Cho is a polarising character. You like him, or you hate him. I'm definitely not fond of him. His name is a pun on the Spanish word “borracho”, which means drunk, and as you can see here he even has a Drunken Master fighting style. It’s a pretty stereotypical fighting style in games of course; popularised in the West by the 1974 Jackie Chan film Drunken Master, we’ve seen lots of characters use it, including Shun Di in the Virtua Fighter series, and even Jackie Chan himself in his own 90s fighting game, which I did videos on a few years back. Indeed, Bo Rai Cho’s usage of it here is yet another martial arts film reference (of which there are tons throughout the MK series), and as fighting styles go it is pretty good.
What’s not good is Bo Rai Cho’s aesthetic, which is godawfully childish. Some of his attacks include throwing up on and farting on the opponent; fighting techniques we haven’t seen since Primal Rage 2, of all games. MKX has a lot of this ridiculously meta humour, where it’s purposefully so cringy that you’re supposed to enjoy it. I can see why that would have its fans, but it doesn’t do much for me I must say.
The worst part about Bo Rai Cho is that he fucking rocks, from what I’ve played of him anyway. Really logical combos with easy to understand executions, and him becomes even more of a brute when he corners the opponent. He has an insanely easy launch combo (bp, fp) which can even be comboed into over and over again, for around 29% damage or so if you can get the timing. He has a couple of auto-combo specials which basically act like a grab, and can even be hit into from a launch attack, which is pretty cool. His fart attack, for how ridiculous it is, is at least a stun attack, and it means I actually found him quite enjoyable to see, which definitely makes this one of the more cognitively dissonant videos I’ve done, where I both like and dislike the character simultaneously.
Overall, a godawful character with a great moveset. Not something we see all too often.
