#164 Vanessa Lewis breaks VF4 Kumite \\ Virtua Fighter 4 PS2
Playing Vanessa Lewis in Virtua Fighter 4's Kumite mode--after warming up a bit in VERSUS against my own Lion AI, and once I got into the swing of things with my new cheap sequence, the spin kick into a three-hit combo (G+K, dfP~K,K)--after a pretty rough first 35 minutes here ;_+--I was indeed pretty much able to break the game this way; in 4, the opponent has no real way to avoid the spin kick, and if they block it, even though they are not shown as staggered, they are still left in a momentary state where they cannot block the follow-up--or, in a wall-less arena, you can just spin-kick repeatedly to push the blocking player out.
I beat a Champion rank character pretty handily with the sequence--Champion is two ranks above 10th dan : o: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps2/466561-virtua-fighter-4/faqs/16094
My Lion AI got a Mantis Head "dunce" item due to the number of consecutive hits he took from the sequence : o ( https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps2/466561-virtua-fighter-4/faqs/16875 ).
Starting at 2nd dan:
0:00 - testing the sequence vs my Lion AI
7:29 - my Lion AI gets stuck with the huge Mantis Head dunce item
13:07 - Kumite! (rough start ; P)
35:48 - sweet beret! (& better fighting)
45:43 - promoted to 3rd dan!
1:17:30 - new necklace and colors!
1:28:27 - promoted to 4th dan!
1:33:29 - wrap-up & what's next!
Notes:
16'30 - Vanessa AI rings herself out : o
39'00 - it was Aoi who had the crazy dive kick, I think
58'50 - beating a champion rank AI
1'13"20 - murdered by Aoi in ranking match
1'26"56 - bad theory about being able to spin kick from close range after block--doesn't work against Sarah in the final match
1'30"22 - spin kick anti-air winner vs kage : o
1'30"50 - crushing open stage comeback by sarah
The two matches I lost once I got into the flow (I went 23 wins and 2 losses) were both rank-important matches. ;_; I still get too nervous in those; I get flustered and can't think straight, and my execution goes to heck, ughh. I couldn't even push Sarah out of a wall-less ring (and she took the hit instead of letting herself get pushed back in what would have been the winning move, the smarty pants). Also, both she and Aoi were swatting me out of the air like champs, and went HAM on offense in general in later rounds. Makes me wonder if the AI turns itself up a bit higher in rank matches--but more likely it's just me cracking!
In fact, the sequence seems easier to do against upper-dan or higher ranked opponents--they block more consistently, which is more advantageous to the pattern, and they don't tend to rush in as quickly, which can disrupt it entirely.
Anyway, the move is strong enough that there's little reason to use anything else, which kind of ruins playing Vanessa in VF4 for myself, alas! I'm going to be switching to playing her in VF5, where the spin kick is significantly nerfed--completely whiffs on crouching characters, for instance.
