*DISCLAIMER: Not ALL parents with a mental illness is unhealthy. This video talks about parents who are in denial, reactive, lacks insight, and doesn't get treatment.

Would you ever attend a family session with your mentally ill parent?

Growimg up with a mentally ill parent is a whole other world. Although you may love your parent, it isn't easy to support or manage a mentally ill parent who is not aware of the negative impact of their mental illness on you.

Seeking out therapy with your mentally ill parent may help with communication but there is no guarantee.

A mentally ill parent may not have the capacity to admit to behaviors or emotions that have contributed to your emotional and psychological challenges. Even more, a mentally ill parent may struggle to recognize their own need for help.

Family therapy can truly be either a saving grace or a boxing ring. For many of my uncertain clients it’s a boxing ring full of traps, snakes, confusion, and drama. No matter how much I attempt to convince some of my clients that family therapy (depending on the kind of therapist you have) can be helpful, many say "absolutely not" with their parent.

The fear of the session becoming a living breathing soap opera is real.

As you watch this video, consider whether family therapy would help (even just a little) your family.
