1942 is set in the Pacific theater of World War II. The goal is to reach Tokyo and destroy the entire Japanese air fleet. The player pilots a plane dubbed the inch super Aceinch (but its appearance is clearly that of a Lockheed P-38 Lightning).
The player has to shoot down enemy planes through the 32 increasingly grueling stages. To avoid enemy fire, the player can perform a roll or inch loop-the-looping. During the game, the player may collect a series of different power-ups, one of them allowing the plane to be escorted by two other smaller fighters in a Tip Tow formation.
There were a few enemies: Kawasaki Ki-61s, Mitsubishi A6M Zeros, and Kawasaki Ki-48s. The boss plane is a Nakajima G8N.
1942 is a video game produced by Capcom. Originally an arcade game, it was later released on the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Game Boy Color. The game was later followed by 1943: The Battle of Midway.
As the name implies, it takes place during World War II in 1942 (while the sequel takes place during the same war the next year). Despite being made by a Japanese company (Capcom), the game requires you to head to Japan and defeat the entire fleet.
The arcade version has been released on the Virtual Console in Japan on December 21, 2010, in the PAL region on January 21, 2011, and in North America on January 24, 2011.
