198X Arcade Game Simulator | 198X Gameplay - Pretty, but shallow | CDPOG
We check out the new "game" 198X, a thing you can play on your home computing device. 198X is not really a classic game, or a walking simulator, or a choose your own adventure, but it is something different. Different and a bit presumptuous and boring in my opinion. The internet is reviewing 198X VERY kindly, heaping praise upon it like its the second coming, now maybe its because we were talking through the whole thing, but the game never really clicked with us.
198X is a series of a few minigames where you play a stage or two of a different genre of game, and then the main character talks while a little video plays in the background. And thats it, thats the game. The graphics are very nice, but it would have been just as enjoyable to watch it like a video, than to have to play it, as the minigames are all stuff we have seen a trillion times before, yes, which I am sure the game devs did on purpose. Holy cow look at that sentence, there are far too many commas in it, this mans should know how to make a sentence end, oh no i did it again.
If this was 2003 and I saw the game 198X on newgrounds I would have been blown away, just like that video of the guy who went on to make the Scott Pilgrim arcade game. That video that guy did was amazing, and the scott pilgrim game was super fun. This game is neither of those things. So watch our gameplay video of the first 2 games from 198X, and move on with your life. Go watch Star Trek TNG, much better use of your time.
