1994 Nostalgia: Sid Meier's Colonization; Max Difficulty France: Ep 13
16It is 1492. We cross the Atlantic as the French, seeking gold, glory, and a path to India. Instead, we discover a New World full of native riches, native peoples, and foreign European competitors. Will we found a colony that will thrive and eventually throw off the shackles of the Old World, embracing the new, or flounder and succumb to destruction during this edited let's play?
Sid Meier's Colonization was released in 1994, two years after I was born, and I can recall playing it not long after, failing miserably to reach independence since I was just a little kid who didn't really understand what was happening in depth. I've always wanted to finally beat this game, so now I've tasked myself to do so on the hardest difficulty, Viceroy, to make the play through more entertaining for anyone who comes to watch. We may fail, but we may also succeed, only time will tell.
Sid Meier's Colonization concerns itself with exploring the New World, establishing colonies, working the land, turning raw goods into manufactured products to sell back in Europe, competing with other Europeans for valuable land primarily by flexing the military, dealing with the Native peoples whether peacefully or military, and finally declaring your colonies to be a newly formed Nation, independent from their old, repressive sovereign.
Sid Meier's Colonization is an old game, but one hell of a nostalgic game, having received many accolades when it was first published. Unfortunately it didn't achieve the kind of success with the public that the Civilization series went on to receive, although it did eventually spawn a remake that was not well received by most people including myself. I won't be playing the vanilla remake as a result later on, but there is an incredible mod I will showcase sometime after this play through is finished that turns the remake into what I believe is a spectacular game.
