A campaign as Fars in EU4 Meiou and Taxes. I aim to form Persia along with the borders of the Sassanian Empire. I will need to conquer the historical territories belonging to Persia while navigating the problems caused by Fars’ instability and the eventual switch to Zoroastrianism. My greatest territorial extent will be the borders of the Sassanid Empire from their greatest extent.

------------------------------------------

There were four Persian dynasties that arose through the last two millennia: the Achaemenids, the Parthians, the Sassanids, and the Safavids. The focus of this campaign will be on the Sassanid Empire. The Sassanids ruled from 224 to 651. The dynasty was started by Ardashir I, who after becoming the ruler of the Pars region expanded his power by conquering his neighbors before defeating and overthrowing the last Parthian ruler, Artabanus IV.

The Sassanian Empire is considered to be a high point of Iranian history, with the regions under its control experiencing several golden ages. The Empire fought many wars with the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the White Huns and various Indian polities. The religion of the Empire was Zoroastrian.

The Sassanian Empire fought a three decades long war with the Byzantine Empire from 602 to 628 that proved to be inconclusive but drained the Sassanian treasury of money and the country of manpower. Defeats and overtaxation during the last years of the war increased unrest, leading to the overthrow of the Sasanian ruler Khosrau II. His successor, Kavad II, ruled for just four months before dying. Regions of the empire broke away from it, as the generals, courtiers, and aristocracy fought each other relentlessly. The generals were able to put three ineffective rulers on the throne in four years as the situation around the country continued to deteriorate.

Yazdegerd III came to the throne in 632 and held it until 651. However, the damage from the previous decade of instability was impossible to overcome. The Empire was invaded by the Gokturks in the east and the Khazars in the West. The downfall of the Empire was evident to Persians, who openly spoke of its eventual downfall. The final nail in the coffin for the Sassanian Empire was the Muslim Arabs of the Rashidun Caliphate to the south in Arabia. Rashidun armies defeated Sassanid armies again and again. Yazdegerd spent the next two decades fleeing eastward away from the Caliphate, trying to stop their onslaught. In 651 he sought refuge with a miller in Merv, who killed him, either as an assassin or for his jewelry. With his death the Sassanid Empire came to an end.
