#2 Blasphemous - Mercy Dreams - Ten Piedad
Blasphemous is a metroidvania game developed by Spanish studio Game Kitchen and published by Team17. In this game, you will be using/following the protagonist called the Penitent One, lone survivor of a congregation called the Brotherhood of Silent Sorrow which was massacred by order of the papal figure of Cvstodia, in his own pilgrimage in order to achieve his ultimate penance. Guiding/Assisting the Penitent One in his endeavors are various figures in the game having their own different kind of penance including the Deogracias, a fellow pilgrim Redento, the merchant Candelaria and the mysterious Viridiana. On the other hand, the church of Cvstodia led by his holiness Escribar would go on to stand in his way and would attempt to thwart the completion of his penitence.
A game favorably received by critics upon release and maintained a Metacritic scores of 76 (Nintendo Switch), 77 (PC), 78 (PS4) and 82 (Xbox One). Moreover, it received notable game awards like the indie game of the year in Titanium Awards 2019. Praises were given to its unique art style which presented the surrealism and disturbing images of the Spanish lore; its crisp combat; fluid animations and its diverse character, enemy and boss designs. However, criticisms were given on its basic platforming, level designs, pacing and difficulty.
On my part, I sincerely love this game. The Spanish lore regarding Roman Catholism is a welcome and fresh learning experience for me in the gaming world dominated by Japanese, Greek and Nordic lores. Moreover, I really loved its depiction of the surreal and disturbing world of the said religion through the different designs of its characters having different kind of penance. The fluidity and simplistic combat is also a plus for me as it is strict, punishing which keeps you on your toes and makes you always ready and prepared for the challenges that may come your way. Even though I have some reservations on its platforming sections and controls, overall the game is great for me and one of my favorite games released on 2019. Enjoy the walkthrough!!!
