241History of Area: After the collapse of the government, a pocket of the US military controlled the city as a quarantine zone. As citizens became restless over a lack of rations, the Fireflies instigated the revolt but it was the people of the city who eventually took back their city and the remaining survivors now control the area. It is said by Joel that the children in the military schools are now adults and that most of them would have left or became hunters, hinting that the military abandoned the quarantine zone 10-15 years before the events of the game. The practice of killing outsiders came about after three teenagers were put on public trial for killing a small family of survivors. The leader, instead of prosecuting them, congratulated the teenagers on securing supplies and ordered the rest to follow their example. This was met with some hesitancy and quiet outrage from some of the Pittsburgh citizens but eventually it became common practice.
Anyone that is not a hunter is called a 'tourist' by the survivors. The Hunters use this to their advantage by tricking tourists into thinking they are hurt. They then proceed to rob and kill them once they stop to help.
Joel's initial idea is to visit an acquaintance that owes him a favor and procure a working car from him, which would make their trip to Tommy's a lot easier and quicker. Their ride is cut short, however, as they are ambushed and attacked by a group of hunters in Pittsburgh, forcing them to abandon the pick-up truck and escape on foot. Within the hunter's city, they meet a pair of brothers named Sam and Henry who are also trying to escape, and they agree to work together.
Joel and Ellie arrive in Pittsburgh by way of a pick-up truck that Bill put together for them. In order to pass through the city, Joel had to take a detour away from an old traffic jam. Right after the detour, they are immediately ambushed by Hunters who ram the truck with a bus. As a result Joel crashes into a small grocery store and is forced to fight back. After escaping, they make their way through the buildings towards the Fort Duquesne Bridge, and come across an abandoned hotel with a strong Hunter presence. The player is then presented with options: take each enemy down one by one stealthily, run in guns blazing and start a full-out firefight, or sneak around the hostiles and not waste time or resources. [1] Joel and Ellie also snuck/fought their way through the Hunters in an abandoned hotel and later their Humvee in the Financial District.
Later, they run into Sam and Henry, members of a group of survivors who were fleeing Hartford and decided to take refuge in the city. After taking out the skeleton crew guarding the bridge, the group made their escape. Travelling through a sewer system that was formerly a safe settlement and now littered with Infected, the small group made it to a suburb outside of the city. There, the Hunters again confronted the group with a military sniper rifie, and later the Humvee from before. The group successfully fends them off, but later was forced to flee from the horde of infected attracted by the sounds of the fight.
