The Callisto Protocol is a Survival Horror-Action Game developed by Striking Distance Studios and published by Krafton (previously known as Bluehole studios who are famed for creating PUBG) which is considered a spiritual successor of the Dead Space series as its development was headed by Dead Space creator Glen Schofield. In this game, you will be playing as Jacob, a mere freelance space freight transporter contracted by the United Jupiter Company (UJC) who plans to retire after one last shipment between Europa (where a mysterious outbreak occurred) and the Black Iron Prison (BIP) in planet Callisto. However, their last trip proved to be disastrous as they are suddenly boarded by a terrorist group called Outer Way for unknown reasons. As a result of their sudden encounter, Jacob’s actions led to the crash landing of their ship to Callisto where he and the Outer Way leader Dani Nakamura being the only survivors. Picking them up at the outskirts of Callisto is BIP head security officer Captain Leon Ferris who not only arrested Dani but also the innocent Jacob. Upon Jacob and Dani’s imprisonment, the BIP would then encounter another virus outbreak similar to Europa where the two would need to cooperate to each other despite their differences in order to survive and escape.

Despite the large budget development, heavy marketing and having well-known actors playing the lead roles, the game would only receive low scores of 68 (PC), 69 (PS5) and 70 (XSXS). Praises were made on the graphics of the game, the details and designs of its environment and characters, its gore, as well as the smoot melee gameplay which is the game’s biggest strength an added the action genre in the game. As for the criticisms though, most reviewers have noted the various technical issues, bugs, the few enemy variations, repetitive boss fights and likewise lack of variety thereof, the uninteresting and weak storyline, and how it pales in comparison with the Dead Space series as to the horror aspect of the game. Despite selling well in the market for horror games, Krafton would announce that it failed to meet sales expectations (which imo is unreasonably high) which led to Glen Schofield leaving the studio and makes any sequel or other titles on the franchise questionable.

As for me, I really enjoyed playing this game. The graphics are indeed amazing, the details of the characters, their armors, as well as the setting is really horror-inducing. As for the gameplay, I loved the melee aspect introduced which are almost non-existent in the Dead Space series. Furthermore, you can chain combo between melee and range which is badass. However, I found it somewhat weird that you have to rely on melee in order to beat most of its enemies as using only guns will render you wasting a lot of ammos just to kill one or 2 basic biophage enemies. As for my criticisms, I did not notice too much issues and bugs in the game but shared the feeling that its enemy variety and boss fights seriously lacking (you literally fight the same boss type enemy four times in the game other than the final boss). As for the horror aspect of the game, in my opinion it also has the same horror feeling in its environment compared to the Dead Space series. However, considering how your character is nearly invincible in melee fights (you just literally HOLD left or right to dodge attacks), it makes the game feel less scary as your character is overpowered. Overall, despite its issues, the game was a blast for me and an 8/10 if I would score it. Although, it’s a bummer that there might be no more sequel in the game due to the Schofield leaving the studio. Enjoy the walkthrough!!!
