There were few surprises but many big moves in the 2010 week six college football rankings as released on October 3, 2010. Once again the top two teams held their ground with victories during the week.
Number-one Alabama capitalized on a comedy of errors committed by the Florida Gators to dominate their SEC rival 31-6. Second-ranked Ohio State also pulled out a win to keep their spot, overcoming a scare from the Illinois Fighting Illini in a 24-13 win.
Third place in the AP College Football Poll and USA Today Coaches Poll saw a new resident, the Oregon Ducks. Oregon leap-frogged the Boise State Broncos with a convincing 52-31 win over the Stanford Cardinal. Boise State also won big, earning a 59-0 victory over New Mexico State.
The TCU Horned Frogs rounded out the top five in both polls as they remained a perfect 5-0 on the year.
After beginning the season in the top five, the Texas Longhorns dropped out of both polls completely this week following a 28-20 loss to the Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Rivalry game. Oklahoma moved up to seventh in the coaches poll and sixth in the AP Poll as a result.
Despite being without head coach Mark Dantonio for the game, the Michigan State Spartans get the most-improved award for the week. The Spartans upset the 11th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers 34-24 to jump from 21st to 16th in the AP Poll.
