The 2015 Ford Edge is what a modern midsize crossover ought to be. Most of us don't need off-road chops, but we do demand good manners on the pavement as well as a reassuring grip in bad weather. This is exactly what the new Edge offers, since it's based on the excellent Fusion sedan. Here are five reasons why the Edge really does have the edge.
Drives Like a Champ
Wave goodbye to sloppy SUVs and say hello to one crisp crossover. The Edge is composed and controlled like a good sport sedan, and obeys every driving input with precision. The new design even makes it look more agile.
Strong Engines
What used to be an option in the previous model is this generation's standard engine. It's a 2-liter, 4-cylinder turbocharged to make 245 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque, which is a decent amount of muscle to exploit the Edge's great chassis, and can still hit 30 miles per gallon on the highway. Alternatively, the 2.7-liter turbo V6 in the Sport model has 300 hp -- ideal for effortless cruising and passing.
Quality Cabin
The Edge is a straight-ahead 5-seater, but that means plenty of space for passengers and storage alike. Those in the front enjoy a refined dash layout with soft-touch plastics, while those in the rear can relax in reclining seats. Every trim level has effective sound insulation for a quiet ride.
Fine Features
Depending on what trim level you choose, there's a long list of available features, such as a Sony sound system upgrade, panoramic sunroof and heated rear seats. But even the most basic version still gets a rearview camera and Ford's Sync voice-activated infotainment system.
Premium Feel, Regular Price
For a midsize crossover to drive this well, offer so many features and generally exude an upscale vibe, you'd usually be looking at something expensive and German. But the Edge starts below $30,000, way less than a BMW X3.
Autotrader Says
The 2015 Ford Edge is all-new for this model year and improves on the first generation in every way. Shoppers of midsize crossovers should check it out, even if they're looking at premium models as well.
