For more than a decade, the Nissan Murano has been a popular choice for shoppers interested in a comfortable upscale crossover with a solid track record. Now, the all-new 2015 Murano underwent a pretty drastic redesign, so we thought we'd find out how a 2012 model stacks up against the new one.
On the outside, it's clear the new model sports a more aggressive look from every angle. The new model also has a softer ride, and it feels more luxurious overall. Inside, the 2012 Murano still looks great, including lots of luxury features. Meanwhile, the 2015 model has been tweaked to feel more modern, with welcome additions such as Nissan's unique zero-gravity seats.
Under the hood, both Murano models are powered by a 3.5-liter V6 -- though the 2015 Murano offers better gas mileage than the 2012. On the road, some drivers report the old Murano offers slightly sportier handling, while the new model feels smoother thanks to a refined continuously variable automatic transmission. Still, we think the driving dynamics are generally pretty similar between both Murano models.
When it comes to safety, both models scored well in government crash tests. But for those who want the very latest in safety and technology, the new model is the way to go. In addition to offering more safety gadgets than the old Murano (such as adaptive cruise control and Nissan's Around View camera system), the new one touts a larger center touchscreen and an improved infotainment system.
As for pricing, an older Murano in a higher trim level may offer a better buy for budget-conscious shoppers interested in getting a good deal -- especially if you're willing to go without some of the latest gadgets. Drivers who may be apprehensive about buying a used model can even opt for a certified pre-owned version, which touts a rigorous mechanical inspection and a 7-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Regardless of which one you choose, we think there's a lot to like about the Nissan Murano.
