201Although the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry have long dominated the midsize-sedan market, Subaru is out to change that with the 2016 Subaru Legacy. Fully redesigned last year, the Legacy offers a new look and other updates distinguishing it from the outgoing model.
With a starting price of around $22,000 and a fully equipped MSRP of around $35,000, the Subaru Legacy is competitive with most midsize-sedan rivals when it comes to pricing.
It's the same story under the hood, as the Legacy offers an efficient 4-cylinder engine and powerful 6-cylinder engine, both of which tout competitive fuel economy numbers: 26 miles per gallon in the city and 36 mpg on the highway for the 4-cylinder or 20 mpg city/29 mpg hwy for the 6-cylinder. What sets the Legacy apart, however, is its impressive standard all-wheel drive, something you won't see in any competitor.
Offered in three trim levels (a base model, a midlevel Premium trim and an upscale Limited version), the Legacy touts smooth, composed handling and an upscale cabin. We especially found the sedan's driver's seat to be highly supportive for long trips or commutes, while the back seat is roomy enough for adults. Other benefits include a split folding rear seat, a big trunk with a wide opening and available amenities such as a Harman Kardon sound system and dual-zone automatic climate control. Unfortunately, we do have one interior drawback to note: We think the Legacy's low roofline makes it hard to install a child seat in the back seat.
In terms of technology, Subaru's Starlink infotainment system has undergone a major overhaul to add remote access and an impressive app suite. We also like the voice-control feature and the tabletlike touchscreen. Then, there's safety: The Legacy basically leads the midsize-sedan pack, offering many innovations such as forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control and a blind spot monitoring system in its $1,195 EyeSight option suite.
The bottom line: We like virtually everything about the 2016 Subaru Legacy, and we think it's finally ready to seriously compete with midsize rivals such as the Accord and Camry.
