322If you're in the market for an affordable midsize sedan, you might not realize that the 2015 Volkswagen CC offers an intriguing alternative. The CC is perhaps best known for turning heads with its slinky lines, but this foxy 4-door also gives you a practical interior and a decently capacious trunk. Volkswagen likes to call it a 4-door coupe, but truth be told, it's a previous-generation Passat sedan with a fastback roofline, and that's a combination even the most sensible sedan shopper might consider. Here are five reasons why the 2015 CC gets straight A's from our staff.
Unique Styling
It may be based on that old Passat, but the CC has been nipped and tucked into a genuinely attractive car. It's frankly hard to believe that anything derived from a stolid European family sedan could look this good. For fashionable 4-door transportation at a reasonable price, there's the CC, and then there's everything else. Indeed, the next rung up the ladder is the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, and it'll run you an extra $10,000 or more.
Excellent Engines
The CC's standard engine is Volkswagen's excellent 2.0T 4-cylinder, which is rated at a healthy 200 horsepower. It's turbocharged too, giving you a meaty 207 lb-ft of torque from just 1,700 revolutions per minute. That gives the 2.0T the energetic character of a larger engine when you're zipping around town, but unlike most larger engines, it also gets a thrifty 32 miles per gallon on the highway. If you're not impressed yet, you can specify an optional 280-hp V6 that packs a serious punch and comes paired with exclusive 4MOTION all-wheel drive. Just don't expect to do quite as well at the pump.
Surprisingly Spacious Seating
You might think that the CC's rakish styling doesn't leave room for full-sized humans inside, but prepare to be pleasantly surprised. Although its rear headroom can be a little tight, there's plenty of room for most adults to ride all day in comfort, and unlike the original CC, the current model has 3-across seating in back, providing room for five in a pinch. We like the sporty yet accommodating front seats, too. In typical Volkswagen fashion, they're among the best you'll find in a nonluxury car.
Plentiful Standard Features
The CC doesn't just look like a premium car; it's equipped like one, too. Standard features include bi-xenon headlights with LED accents, heated seats and dual-zone automatic climate control, while higher trims get perks such as leather upholstery and touchscreen navigation. That's something to keep in mind when you're comparing costs: The CC's base price is definitely higher than a Camry's, for instance, but you get more luxuries. While you could get a Camry V6 for the price of a 4-cylinder CC, the VW's turbocharger is the great equalizer. In most driving scenarios, the CC will feel just as perky, if not more so.
Sport and Comfort in Equal Measure
Volkswagen's engineers are among the best at finding that perfect suspension calibration, and the CC is a case in point. The ride is never harsh, even with those big alloy wheels underfoot, yet the CC is plenty capable of navigating corners with confidence. This is a driver's car that passengers will also appreciate, and we wouldn't change a thing.
