88The midsize luxury segment has been dominated by the Germans for decades. Sure, the Acura TLX and Lexus GS deliver great value and noted reliability, but for many folks shopping for an upscale sedan, the search begins in Munich and ends in Stuttgart. Audi truly entered the fray with the A6 back in 1995, and now it contends alongside the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, but is priced about $5,000 less. Does the savings make the Audi a good deal, or is the A6 lacking in crucial areas?
To put it simply, the Audi isn’t lacking much. In terms of looks, few cars manage to be as subtly stunning in person as the A6, with its LED head- and taillights and well-proportioned 3-box design. A 2.0-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine powers the lower trims, making 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, while an excellent 3.0-liter supercharged V6 sends 333 horsepower and 325 lb-ft to all four wheels in the Quattro-equipped Prestige and Premium plus trims.
Our 3.0T test model featured the 8-speed tiptronic automatic transmission, standard, and a Bose audio system, 2 USB ports, Bluetooth, a rear-view camera, and heated and ventilated 8-way adjustable front seats. 20-inch wheels were also optioned, and Audi’s Cold Weather package, featuring heated rear coming in at $66,875. A6s start, however, at a much more reasonable $46,200. Considering the level of luxury and its excellent engine, the Audi performs admirably against both the BMW and Mercedes.
