The 2016 Mazda CX-9 still has three rows and a sporty “Zoom-Zoom” nature, but adds something new to the mix: an air of luxury. And that near-luxury feel is offered at a price below those of large luxury SUVs. The new CX-9 sheds a bunch of weight compared to its predecessor, which let Mazda put serious resources into quality and sound deadening, resulting in a quieter, more upscale cabin feel.
Mazda ditched the V6 from the previous model in favor of a 4-cylinder. The CX-9 is powered by a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline four making 227 hp with 87-octane fuel and 250 hp with 93-octane. That might not seem like much, but it also makes 310 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy for the front-wheel-drive version is 22 miles per gallon city, 28 highway, 24 combined. The all-wheel-drive gets 21 mpg city, 26 highway, 23 combined. That doesn’t sound ideal, but the CX-9 gets better mileage than competitors in many cases. The CX-9 is proof positive you don’t need a V6 to be competitive among SUVs. Read more on CarGurus: https://cargur.us/crWY6
