2016 Volkswagen GTI | 5 Reasons to Buy | Autotrader
In its seventh generation, the 2016 Volkswagen GTI is better than ever. We were a little worried that the latest GTI wouldn't live up to its most recent generation, but rest assured, we can say it definitely lives up to the hype after driving it. Here's five reasons why you should buy the best GTI yet.
Intoxicating Performance
The difference between quick and fast is clearly evident in the GTI. The credit goes to a peppy, turbocharged 210-horsepower 4-cylinder with 258 lb-ft of torque. We love it as is, but we really loved the optional Performance package, which boasts a thrilling 220 horses. Putting the GTI's pedal to the metal kicks the turbo into some serious fun.
Incredible Versatility
The GTI's space-efficient cabin is among the best in the business. Make no mistake: It's a compact car, but the GTI can accommodate a pair of 6-footers in its roomy back seat with no problem at all. Hauling cargo is a breeze, too. This model has an amazing 52.7 cu ft. of space with the rear seatbacks folded down. Think of it as a mini SUV, except the GTI's way more fun and easier to zip around town.
Rich Equipment Roster
You don't have to pay up for extra features when purchasing a VW GTI. The long list of standard equipment is highlighted by the inclusion of a sport-tuned suspension, a 5.8-inch touchscreen and Bluetooth phone and audio. You can even specify adaptive dampers and xenon headlights if you desire. And then there's the Performance package, which features extra power, larger brakes and a limited-slip differential.
Uptown Interior
This model offers Audi-type quality at a lower price. Although the GTI is mostly known as a sporty hatchback, it also has some appealing luxurious touches that you might not expect. Red accent stitching gives the cabin panels some attitude, while the sport front seats offer superb lateral and long-distance support. The GTI has a class-leading interior quality, thanks to tasteful finishes and supple surfaces everywhere you touch.
Exceptionally Fun to Drive
The GTI lives for the excitement of everyday driving, and behind the wheel is where the GTI really shines. The sound of the turbocharged engine is glorious, and corners are generally a cinch -- especially if the limited-slip differential's on board. By the numbers, it might not be super fast, but the GTI has all the swiftness that most drivers could ever want, especially with all the available 220 horses at full gallop.
Autotrader Says
Looking for a reasonably priced do-it-all performance hatchback? Starting under $26,000, we think that the 2016 Volkswagen GTI is one of the strongest candidates out there. Test drive one, and see if you agree.
