Midsize SUVS are hotter than ever. That means every manufacturer is working overtime to give drivers more of what they want and need. GMC is no exception, with the rollout of the completely redesigned 2017 GMC Acadia.
The new Acadia is smaller and lighter, to better compete with rivals like Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander. It's offered in six well-equipped trim levels -- all with new-and-improved powertrains. We're driving the midlevel AWD SLT-1 with the All-Terrain package. And we recommend the more powerful V6 over the lackluster 4-cylinder engine.
With a handsomely updated (albeit scaled back) exterior, the Acadia is now more enjoyable to drive. Visibility has improved, and more direct handling and steering give it a carlike feel. This means it's also a lot easier to navigate while running errands around town.
A thorough redesign of the interior has given the Acadia an upscale vibe and the cabin is surprisingly quiet on the road. You can upgrade to higher trims for creature comforts like heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel and a dual-pane sunroof. And you can keep everyone comfy in the back with standard tri-zone climate control, an available entertainment system and heated second-row seats. Just keep in mind, the available third row is tight... so it's basically a kids-only zone. The new Acadia has slightly less cargo room than the previous model -- but for most people who do the occasional road trip or home improvement store run, this shouldn't be a deal breaker.
Tech-wise, the new Acadia is MUCH improved. Standard features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto keep the interface familiar and easy to use. And a standard 4G Wi-Fi hotspot is also convenient if you have lots of kids and devices.
As for safety, the list of available driver-assist features is long. We like the addition of a Teen Driver system that helps you monitor your young driver's habits and set limits on certain features... And there's a new Safety Alert Seat that vibrates to warn you if there's a possible crash threat.
All in all, if you're shopping for a well-equipped midsize SUV with top-of-the-line tech and safety features, the 2017 GMC Acadia should definitely be on your list.
