2017 Jeep Compass Unveiling
1The 2017 Jeep Compass is an all-new model, sporting a look that's far closer to the current Cherokee and Grand Cherokee than the model that came before it. It's still rocking the seven-slot grille that stands as a hallmark of Jeep design, but the whole package is significantly more cohesive than before.
The inside is no longer a monochrome, hard-plastic penalty box, too, which is nice. It looks, again, like a hybrid of the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee, with a multitude of physical buttons and knobs resting below the UConnect infotainment system. Depending on the model, the driver gets either a 3.5- or 7-inch information display nestled between the gauges.
In terms of powertrain, options are limited in the US. There's only one available engine -- a 2.4-liter I4 that puts out 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. If the buyer prefers front-wheel drive, he or she can choose a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. Move to a 4x4 drivetrain, and the automatic transmission gains three additional gears for a total of nine. The manual is offered on the 4x4, as well. The four-banger is capable of achieving up to 30 mpg.
If going off-road is on your to-do list, there's a new Trailhawk configuration available. That's the most rugged trim, offering the same baubles that are available on other Trailhawk models, like tow hooks, chunkier tires, a low range with a 20-to-1 crawl ratio, an increased ride height and better approach, breakover and departure angles (30, 24 and 34 degrees, respectively).
