2017 Nissan Pathfinder: First Drive Review Video
In some ways, the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder is very similar to the 2016 model, but there are a few differences.
One obvious change is the Pathfinder's look: There's a more SUVlike look up front with standard LED headlights, new wheels and a reworked rear end, as well.
The biggest functional change is to the engine, a new version of Nissan's 3.5-liter V6. It makes more power without sacrificing fuel economy.
This is a change you can feel right away. Acceleration is more brisk than before, and changes to the suspension and steering give the 2017 Pathfinder a lighter, quicker feel overall. The transmission is also better -- the continuously variable automatic feels more refined and now has the feeling of traditional automatic shifting, but only when you really punch the gas.
The engine is also updated for 2017. The new 3.5-liter engine makes 284 horsepower, versus 260 hp for the 2013-2016 version.
Nissan says some Pathfinder buyers tow items such as a boat or Jet Skis. The 2017 Pathfinder has a 6,000-lb towing capacity, which is excellent for its class.
Reduced body motion on rough roads, a quicker steering ratio and a revised tire compound all work to improve ride and handling.
Surprisingly, the Pathfinder can actually handle some off-road duties. The on-demand 4x4-i system includes a locking feature, as well as hill-start assist and hill-descent control. This is important from a functional and an image point of view, as Pathfinders have been known for off-road ability since they were first introduced in the late 1980s.
Other updates include a motion-activated lift gate -- you can use your foot to open the rear lift gate. There's a revised touchscreen, larger fonts and an icon-based, pinch-to-zoom screen.
There's more driver-assistance tech for 2017: Forward-collision braking and warning are new. Moving-object detection was added to Nissan's Around View Monitor. Also, Intelligent Cruise Control is now available.
Base price for the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder starts at under $30,000.
