The seven-passenger 2022 Rivian R1S sport-utility vehicle will be the second production model from Rivian, an upstart electric vehicle manufacturer based in California. The first-ever R1S takes direct aim at the Tesla Model X, which is the only other three-row all-electric SUV currently available. The R1S will also be less expensive than the Model X when it goes on sale. The R1S shares many of its attributes with the R1T pickup. Like the R1T, it offers a 128.9-kWh battery pack that the EPA estimates is good for 316 miles of driving per charge. The R1S will be sold directly to consumers, although Rivian says that it also will set up a network of service centers and Tesla-like stores.
What's New for 2022?
Rivian is starting off by delivering orders of the Launch Edition. For 2022, the R1S is only offered with a quad-motor setup and a 128.9-kWh "Large" battery. Rivian also significantly raised the price of 2022 R1S models, a move that initially impacted people who made reservations before March 1, 2022, but the company later backtracked that specific decision in the wake of customer backlash. Next year, a more affordable, entry-level Explore model is expected to join the lineup. A new dual-motor configuration making over 600 horsepower will enter production, too, alongside a smaller standard battery (dual-motor models only) and a larger "Max" battery pack (quad-motor models only).
With a stately design and a serene, leather-lined cabin, the 2022 GV80 is a perfect flagship for the Genesis SUV lineup. From the moment you open the driver's door, the GV80's interior impresses with lap-of-luxury amenities and finishes, which earns it an Editors' Choice award from us. Aggressive drivers will likely find performance-oriented rivals such as the Audi SQ8 and the Porsche Cayenne more enticing, but the GV80's ride is composed and comfortable. A turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder is standard, but a more powerful twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 is available and helped the GV80 snap off a quick 5.3-second run to 60 mph at our test track. If you're looking for a premium SUV that's just as posh as a BMW X5 or a Mercedes-Benz GLE-class, the GV80 is worth a close look, especially because its unique approach to luxury sets it apart from its European rivals.
What's New for 2022?
Little has changed for the GV80 this year, but Genesis has added a Prestige Matte trim that replaces the exterior's glossy chrome and paint finishes with flat matte ones. The Prestige Matte can be ordered in Melbourne Gray, Matterhorn White, or Brunswick Green. Also new this year is a range-topping Prestige Signature trim that creates a spacious four-seat interior by replacing the rear seats with a pair of six-way power-adjustable captain's chairs and adds other luxury features such as a wireless smartphone charging pad for rear-seat occupants.
