Rally-inspired sport compact cars are on the verge of extinction, but the next-generation Subaru WRX aims to reignite interest for this enthusiast-focused breed. With the death of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo years ago, and the more recent exit of the Ford Focus RS, the WRX and the higher-performance WRX STI are the only remaining options for fans of the World Rally Championship—at least until the next-gen VW Golf R arrives. With the adoption of a new architecture that should improve driving dynamics, the possibility of a more powerful turbocharged flat-four engine, and the likelihood of a nicer interior, the 2022 WRX promises to be a big improvement over the outgoing version.
What's New for 2022?
Based on an official announcement that included a heavily veiled teaser image, Subaru will unleash the next generation of the WRX for the 2022 model year. While there are a lot of specifics that we still don't know, the aforementioned teaser and the spy photos that we've captured as well as our well-informed speculation have us chomping at the bit to see the production-intent version, which will boast a large hood scoop and bulging fenders.
Swedish hypercar maker Koenigsegg made a name for itself with the Agera RS. That model stood as the world's fastest production car, able to hit a top speed of 278 mph. Its replacement is the Jesko, a hypercar cut from the same mold as its supremely impressive predecessor. With its cavernous gills, sinewy haunches, and splayed tail, the Jesko looks fast and fearless. This is modern automotive design. A 1280-hp V-8 provides the muscle, backed up by a state-of-the-art nine-speed transmission that was built in-house. The Jesko starts at roughly $3 million. From what we can tell, this car's talents justify its not-insignificant price.
